Question:
My parents have a 5 year old miniature poodle bitch that has canine
diabetes.
The vet has tried using both beef and pork based insulin to treat it but to
no avail,
and time is now runing out.
Has anyone encountered this problem ?
Are there any other methods of treatment for canine diabetes ?
Answer:
Dogs that are unresponsive to insulin have two possibilities:
1. They have antibodies to insulin. Pork insulin has an identical structure
to canine insulin, so this is unlikely in your case.
2. Something is interfering with the insulin. The most common likely cause
here is canine cushing's syndrome. Has your vet checked for Cushing's
Syndrome? If he hasn't, TELL HIM TO.
