Question:
On Wednesday at 27 1/2 weeks, I was given the one-hour glucose test.
They didn't warn me ahead of time that I would be given this test, so
approximately an hour before going into the clinic, I ate half a bagel,
an apple, and a glass of OJ. So two hours after my meal and one hour
after my glucose test, my blood sugar level came back as 197. The
clinic's cut off point is 140 so they have diagnosed me as having
gestational diabetes. They WILL NOT give me the three-hour test because
they say my initial test score was too high and that a three-hour test
would endanger both me and my baby and also they insist that there was
no need for me to fast eight hours before the test so they are sure the
reading is accurate.
Now I'm stuck pricking my finger four times a day and also eating a very
restricted diet. On Tuesday, they're having me see a diabetic
specialist to assess my BSL's and to see if I need insulin.
Does this all sound a bit hasty and screwy to you all? I just don't
understand why they are proceeding so quickly, especially since I've
heard so many people say that the one-hour test is often wrong.
Any comments or advice?
Answer:
I did NOT have to fast before my tests with either pregnancy (and I was with
different Drs for both). And I was okay. But if *you* feel it wasn't
right, ask for another 1 hour test when you see the diabetic specialist. I
don't know anyone who had/has Gestational Diabetes so I have no idea how
accurate the one hour test is. It seems weird to me how half the people
here say they had to fast and the other half didn't. That to me would make
it seem like it can't be too accurate.
Let us know what happens. I think it sounds really weird and they are way
too quick to say you have GD.
