Question:
I am the husband of a Type I diabetic who was diagnosed about 8 months
ago. We are both in our mid 20's and would like to have a child, but
are unsure of the possible complications and what can be done to
minimize them. My wife currently takes Humalog and Ultra Lenta(sp?) 3
times a day. She is concerned about having a child and I am very scared
of what may happen to her or the unborn child. pregnancy and diabetes,Any help would be
greatly appreciated?
Answer:
From what I know about pregnancy and diabetes, the single most important thing is to maintain very
tight control before conception and throughout the pregnancy. That means not overtreating a hypo
and monitoring blood sugars constantly (I've read that many diabetic pregnant women test upwards of
10 times a day). Other than good bg control, I don't think there is anything else to worry about
except the normal stuff, (vitamins, including folic acid before conception).
