Question:
Yesterday my daughter went to the Dr after several days of dizziness. Thought
it might be middle ear infection. Dr. said she had some fluid in there but
didn't think that caused the dizziness. Took some blood for a c-peptide test.
I checked her blood sugar about an hour after she ate a ham sandwich and 2
cookies. Reading was 50, sounded almost hypo to me. Had her drink a glass of
orange juice. Then we went to my grandson's birthday party where she ate cake
and ice cream. Checked her bg when we got home and it was 110.
Is this a pre-diabetes symptom? Or is there an opposite to diabetes where blood
sugar runs low?
Answer:
She might have reactive hypoglycemia. I had it for most of my life prior to
getting diabetes. It is thought by some to be a precursor to diabetes. So
she needs to be careful about what she eats. As with diabetes, there is no
one diet that will work for everyone. The trick for me was to eat a small
amount of something every two hours or so.
There are other medical problems that can cause hypos. Cushing's syndrome
is one such.
