Question:
I have a friend who has non insulin dependant Type 2 Diabetes and no
health insurance. He is seeing a doctor that he first met through
HCHP. This doctor won't even see him again until January, and his
blood sugar is so out of control that he sometimes passes out. He is
having major tooth trouble and his toenails are turning yellow. I am
trying to convince him to seek a different doctor, someone who does
more than just tell him he ought to exercise more and lose 20 pounds.
As best I remember, my friend is on Glucotrol and nothing else. He
refuses to ask the doctor about Rezulin or Glucophage. I guess he
expects the doctor to think of it, or maybe he could not afford it
even if it were prescribed.
He has tried to get into research studies and has not succeeded.
Can anyone recommend a source of diabetes care in the Boston-area
or suburbs north and west (or Worcester-area)? What's best would
be something cheap so he can afford to pay out of pocket.
Are there any support-groups I could suggest he join?
I am worried about him. What can or should I do?
Answer:
The Best would be Deaconess Hospital's endocrinology dept.
The cheapest... I haven't a clue
