Question:
Can anyone provide me with some information regarding juvenile onset
diabetes? Specifically, I would like to learn about the causes as to
why the pancreas suddenly stops secreting insulin necessary to main-
tain the correct blood/sugar levels. Perhaps could it be genetically
or virally linked or maybe even environmentally linked? Any and all
information pertaining to this would be greatly appreciated. If you
prefer to send e-mail, please mail it to: dimsh...@netlink.cts.com
instead of this mailing address. Thanks a lot!
Answer:
Experience with my son leads me to believe that Vicki (and all
the articles I've read) are right. My son (6) was diagnosed with
diabetes soon after a viral infection. Doctors at the time had
no other explanation than to say children seem to be born with
a genetic tendency to diabetes, but it seems to take an infection
to trigger it. It seemed to hold true for him.

I remember reading a few years ago that juvenile-onset diabetes might
be triggered in children with a genetic tendency toward it by certain
viral infections. I believe this was reported as a theory rather than
a fact.
