Question:
A 16-year old daughter of a colleague who is a keen swimmer has been
warned by her coach that she may be diabetic because she lost 5kg of
fluids throughout a 1.5 hour aerobic swimming session !!!
Is this a valid diagnosis ?
The situation:
September 1: (after 3 month summer break from training)
*Drank 1 pint of water during training
*Training was 1.5 hours aerobic
*Weighed 5kg less after session
(implying this amount of weight lost due to fluid loss)
September 30: (after one month medium intensity training)
*Drank 1.5 pints water during session
*Training was 1 hour aerobic
*Weighed 1.5 kg less after session
(implying this amount of weight lost due to fluid loss)
I would appreciate it greatly if anybody could share their expertise
on this one....
Yours Sincerely.....Paul
Answer:
One of the signs of juvenile diabetes can be frequent urination and thirst.
This would be more likely to be an ongoing condition, however, rather than
an acute response to a workout.
Testing for diabetes would be fairly simple and straightforward. It would be a
good idea to check it out with medical personnel (rather than coaches and
websiteies) and find out conclusively.
Obviously, no 16 yr old wants to face the possibility of being diabetic, but
it's best treated if discovered early--she should be able to continue her
swimming regardless. Good luck
