Question:
I have uncontrollable Juvenile Diabetes, have had it for 33 years. My
input to this website is: I eat good meals, I exercise as much as I
can, and still have blood sugar levels higher than normal, meaning I
check my blood sugar 6 times a day, before each meal and snack, use a
sliding scale for high levels of blood sugar, no insulin if I have
levels below 120 mg./dl. and the doctor has me on 70/30 Humulin
(Human) insulin in the morning, and regular at supper time to
compensate for what the 70/30 Humulin Insulin does not cover until the
next day.
Does anyone have any ideas on this? I have been checked by a
hospital, blood sugar levels have been over 1,000 mg./dl. and I do use
a blood meter to detect high and low blood sugars, tested the meter
with another meter, also with a meter checker to see the tolerance
levels are within range, and use glucose testing material to see that
the meter never is non-functional or too far out of tolerance.
Please post a message to mine, or write me at
for more info and maybe some hints I can
give to the doctor to check out.
Answer:
I am on the "Carbohydrate Counting" program, at least that's what we
call it in Canada. They have finally concluded a direct relationship
between insulin and carbohydrates - yes protein and fat aren't even
considered. .
The common relationship is 1 unit of Humulin Regular for 10 grams of
carbs you plan to eat. Some people have higher ratios. I find my
morning ratio is 2+ to 1 and the rest of the day its 1 to 1.
I also take a base of Ultra Lente. 24iu, once a day.
Like you I've had major swings in control <21 year veteran>. Not any
more! Please get your doctor to check it out.
All the best
