Question:
What should women do to control their glucose levels when they have
gestational diabetes?
Answer:
Test your blood sugar. Eat good healthy food regularly if you can, if
morning sickness causes trouble *talk with your doctor* and work out
alternative foodplans that may not be ideal for us normal Type 1's or Type
2's but allow you to keep food down for the baby's sake.
My wife looking over my shoulder reminds me that she consulted with a
nutritionist and had a meal plan that looked, to me, much like a normal Type
1 diabetic meal plan. She also took a quite small amount of long-acticng
insulin (NPH, just like I've been using for years). That of course should be
done with a doctor's supervision: excess insulin can cause lots of other
problems, and it's tricky to get just right with all the metabolic and
hormonal fun and games of pregnancy.
