Question:
hi I'm doing A-level chemistry and was wondering if anyone could answer all,
or some of the following questions for me as I couldn't find a decent
biochem book to get them from. Thankyou
1. What is the difference between a hexose and a pentose?
2. What is the difference between a ribose and a deoxyribose?
3. What class of compunds do sugars belong to, and what two reactive groups
do they contain?
4. What is the difference between a monosaccharide and a disaccaride?
5. What is the basic formula for glucose? (ok, I'm not tremendously clever!)
6. What are two different trioses? what are their functions in cells?
7. Name two diff. pentoses and functions?
8. Name two different hexoses and functions?
And that is all, I hope someone can help me.....I could do the rest, but not
the above Q's,
Answer:
> 1. What is the difference between a hexose and a pentose?
Hexose - 6 carbon atoms in the sugar, pentose - five.
> 2. What is the difference between a ribose and a deoxyribose?
The deoxyribose sugars do not have one of the -OH (alcohol) groups in the
structure. E.g. beta-D-ribose and beta-D-deoxyribose.
> 3. What class of compunds do sugars belong to, and what two reactive
groups
> do they contain?
Carbohydrates. They have two reactive groups - aldehydes or ketones and
alcohol groups.
> 4. What is the difference between a monosaccharide and a disaccaride?
A monosaccharide is a single sugar, whereas a disaccharide is formed by the
combination of two monosaccharide sugars through condensation.
> 5. What is the basic formula for glucose? (ok, I'm not tremendously
clever!)
Empirical formula: C6H12O6
> 6. What are two different trioses? what are their functions in cells?
Glyceraldehyde and dihydroxyacetone.
> 7. Name two diff. pentoses and functions?
> 8. Name two different hexoses and functions?
D(+) ribose and D(-) deoxyribose. Figure out the rest yourself.
