Question:
I am a 38 years old male, I have been diagnosed diabetes 3 years ago
and I have been taking insulin for 1 year.
A few months before starting with my insulin I noticed that the skin
of the tips of my thumb and index in both hands became drier and
drier, to the point that sometimes it breaks along one of the lines of
my fingerprints as if it were an old rag, it bleeds a little and is
painful, it heals spontaneously after a week or so. I saw 4 or 5
specialists and they said it was either: psoriasis, fungal infection
or contact dermatitis, I took the medicines they suggested but the
problem is still there.
I recently heard that there is a link between diabetes and dry skin.
Has anyone experienced such a thing or can point me in the right
direction if there is a connection between these things?
P.S. The rest of my skin is perfectly O.K. so far.
Answer:
Try using some skin lotion, (eg, Vasoline Intensive Care) on your hands.
You might also want to wear rubber gloves while doing things like washing
up the dishes.
Dry skin is a problem common among diabetics. When I used to work on a
diabetic floor of a hospital (long before my own Dx) we used to hand out
AlphaKeri lotion to all our patients.
