Question:
I was just tested for a pregnancy. I won't lie and say that I don't want it.
I'm so excited, I'm literally bouncing off the wall.
Then I remembered hearing something about people with diabetes not being
able to have healthy babies. Is that true?!? Or will I be okay?
Answer:
I had Gestational Diabetes and had a VERY healthy baby. I won't say that
the pregnancy was an easy one though. You'll probably get some food
cravings and won't be able to give in to them. Other times you might not
feel like eating, but you'll still have to. You'll be going to the Dr. a
LOT! I was going there 3 times a week for the last 3 months. Had a
non-stress test and Ultrasound done once a week. And my pregnancy was
induced. I did NOT want this, but was given no choice. Usually if there
are no known complications they will allow a diabetic to carry to term and
then induce if she hasn't started labor by that date. The main risk is that
the baby will get too large. But if you keep your BG under control, this
probably won't happen. You'll also have to keep your numbers lower than
what you are used to. And you'll probably have to eat more often. The
hormones from the pregnancy can do strange things to your BG and it can be
hard to keep it steady. Congratulations!
