Question:
Does diabetes cause obesity?
Answer:
Most docs say "NO" but you have asked the wrong question.
Your question should be:
"Does Insulin Resistance" cause obesity.
The answer to that question is "maybe". It may be a partial cause of
severe or morbid obesity, i.e. I have seen opinions that it "reinforces"
existing obesity.
The theory is:
a. Initial obesity and lack of exercise cause Insulin Resistance
b. Insulin Resistance makes it easier to gain fat lb, harder to lose
fat lb.
c. Additional fat increases Insulin Resistance, which makes it easier
to etc, etc.
Diabetes really isn't part of it. Type 2 Diabetes is a side effect of
Insulin Resistance. One need not be diabetic to suffer the effects of
Insulin Resistance.
I don't remember seeing any refereed medical articles, but I have never
really searched.
